GUEST CURATOR: AN EXHIBITION OF SCHAUN CHAMPION’S WORK FEATURING JOYCE J. SCOTT

The Baltimore Office of Promotion & the Arts is proud to present We Who Believe in Freedom, a survey of works by esteemed Baltimore-based photographer Schaun Champion. We Who Believe in Freedom, will be on view Friday, August 2, 2024 – Sunday, August 4, 2024, at the MICA Pinkard Gallery at 1401 W. Mount Royal Avenue, during Baltimore Artscape 2024 . Art historian and writer Angela N Carroll curated the exhibition. The opening reception will occur on Saturday, August 3, 2024, from 2:00 – 4:00 pm. 

For over a decade, photographer Schaun Champion has used her camera to uplift the beauty of Baltimore City. Through her eyes, iconic artists like Joyce J Scott, Valerie Maynard, Dr. Kokovah Zauditu Selassie, aka “Mama Koko,” and other significant creatives are revered. Champion’s work highlights restorative narratives that celebrate the beauty of Baltimore City by elevating those who contribute to our thriving art ecosystem, social justice movements, and educational initiatives, for the betterment of our community. 

We Who Believe in Freedom, recognizes Champion as an important contemporary photographer who intentionally focuses her practice on documenting and archiving the lives and stories of communities in Baltimore City.
